Chugiak legion races past Wolves
Chugiak Post 33 blew open what had been a close game with nine runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to claim a 14-4 win over Eagle River on Monday, July 16 at Oberg Field in Peters Creek.
Chase Wilson struck out six in six innings of work to get the win for Chugiak, which improved to 11-14 on the season. Wilson also went 3-for-5 at the plate with four RBIs, including a pair of RBI singles in the sixth and a game-tying RBI fielder’s choice in the fourth.
Chugiak opened with three runs in the bottom of the first, only to see that lead disappear when Eagle River shortstop Chris Parker ripped a bases-clearing double in the top of the second.
The Wolves took a 4-3 lead in the top of the third on a pair of Chugiak errors.
Deven Ferriss’ speed set up Justin Schneider’s go-ahead sacrifice fly in the fifth. Ferriss drew a walk from Eagle River starter Wesley Bennice, stole second and advanced to third on Zach Weller’s errant throw down to second.
Ferriss scored three times, Schneider had three RBIs and Chase Gall added a pair of RBIs for Chugiak.
Chugiak’s Cameron Fritz pitched a scoreless seventh to close out Eagle River, which lost its ninth in a row. Fritz had a memorable evening. In addition to pitching and playing right field, he also got hit by three pitches despite not entering the game until the fourth inning.
Chugiak hosts Dimond today (Thursday, July 19) at Oberg Field at 6:30 p.m. On Saturday, July 21, Chugiak heads to Fairbanks for a doubleheader starting at 12:30 p.m. at Arco Field. The same two meet Sunday, July 22 at 11 a.m. at Arco.
Eagle River hosts East on Friday, July 20 at Loretta French at 6:30 p.m. The Wolves play South on Saturday, July 21 at Taylar Young Field at 1 p.m.
The American Legion AA State Tournament begins Friday, July 27 at Mulcahy Stadium.
Service 8, Eagle River 5
Service handed Eagle River its 10th straight loss with an 8-5 victory over the Wolves on Tuesday, July 17 at Loretta French Park. With the loss, Eagle River fell to 7-19 overall.
Chugiak 13, Bartlett 3
Chugiak defeated Bartlett 13-3 on Tuesday, July 17 at Kosinski No. 4. With the win, the Mustangs improved to 12-14 overall.
South 11, Chugiak 1
Chugiak opened the BP Invitational with an 11-1 loss to South Post 4 in five innings Thursday, July 12 at Mulcahy Stadium.
Chugiak managed just two hits.
Chugiak 10, Wasilla 1
Four different Mustangs had multi-hit games as Chugiak cruised past Wasilla 10-1 on Friday, July 13 at the BP Invite at Mulcahy.
Cameron Fritz went 3-for-5 with a double and scored three runs. Chase Wilson went 2-for-3 and scored twice. Deven Ferriss went 2-for-3 with a double, drove in four runs and scored a run. Chase Gall went 3-for-4, including a three-run triple.
Chugiak had 12 total hits and held Wasilla to just two in the seven-inning game.
Fritz got the win, keeping Wasilla hitless and striking out two through four innings of work. In relief, Conner Cimmiyotti gave up just two hits and one run through three innings.
Columbia 13, Chugiak 2
Columbia (Tenn.) Post 19 downed Chugiak 13-2 in the Mustangs’ final game of the BP Invite on Saturday, July 14. Chugiak’s game against Service on Sunday, July 15 was canceled due to rain.
Columbia claimed the tournament title with a 7-3 win over Dimond on Sunday.
Ferriss led Chugiak on offense with two hits, including a double, and two RBIs. Wilson had Chugiak’s only other hit of the game.
ER winless at Bill Miller
Eagle River’s winless streak extended to eight games after going 0-4 at the Bill Miller Big Fish Tournament in Kenai on July 10-12.
After losing 4-1 to Castroville, Texas, and 7-2 to Kenai Post 20 on July 10, Eagle River dropped a 14-6 contest to East on July 11. The Wolves finished the tournament with an 11-1 loss to Strongsville, Ohio, on July 12.
