There will be plenty of familiar faces roaming the sidelines in Mustang country this season.
Head coach Duncan Shackelford is back for his ninth season on the job, and he’s surrounded himself with essentially the same coaching staff as last season.
“I’m really lucky,” Shackelford said.
The only significant change is the rise of Jamie Mayo — the assistant defensive coordinator last season — to defensive coordinator. Mayo takes over for Leon Chatham, who Shackelford said left Alaska for a job in North Dakota.
“He just texted me,” Shackelford said.
Chatham was back at practice last week. The 1973 CHS grad said he’ll be on the sidelines when his work schedule allows him to return home.
Shackelford said the defense under Mayo will remain largely unchanged from years past.
“Some of the terminology is a little different, but Leon and Mayo were two peas in a pod,” Shackelford said. “There’s really no change to what we’re doing.”
Also returning to the sidelines this season will be line/special teams coach Ryan Landers, wide receiver/secondary coach Matt Devlin, linebackers coach Jake Wintersteen, backfield coach Eric Glenn and kicking coach Scott Minor.
“The biggest change is Leon’s not here,” Shackelford said of his longtime assistant.
Shackelford will again call the plays from the sidelines, where he said he plans to run a ball-control, ground-heavy attack.
“That’s what we do,” he said. “It’s no secret.”
Having a group of veteran coaches who know the program, Shackelford said, makes his job that much easier.
“I just have to get out of the way and not screw things up,” he said.
