Still time for exchange

There’s still time for local families to open their homes to a new member.

The STS Foundation, a nonprofit foreign exchange program, is seeking host families for the 2012-13 school year.

“Right now we are trying to find a few more homes,” said STS area coordinator Angela Horvath.

Horvath said there’s an obvious benefit to hosting a high school student from a foreign land.

“It’s really bringing someone into your own family,” she said.

A former exchange student herself, Horvath said the experience of traveling overseas can’t be matched.

“It’s a very enriching experience for every kid no matter where they come from,” said Horvath, who is also hosting a French exchange student who will be enrolled at Chugiak this fall.

Horvath said host families are expected to provide meals and a bed for their exchange student, while the students’ families are required to provide spending money. Horvath said STS tries to match students with families based on interests, hobbies and even religion.

“We make sure they match with the family,” she said.

Horvath said anyone interested in hosting a student can contact her at 884-7129 or email Dwight Hunter at [email protected].

“We can make things happen really quickly if people just give us a call,” she said.

She said hosting an exchange student can enrich a family long after their temporary son or daughter returns home.

“You never forget those experiences,” she said.
