A tight-knit, muscular pack

Wolves preseason training creates ‘brotherhood’

Jason Brewer isn’t the only new addition to the 2012 Eagle River High football program.

The first-year head coach also brought a new team motto with him: “Brotherhood.”

“Anybody that’s ever done anything in life, they’ve had somebody help them,” Brewer said. “We’re trying to instill sticking together, becoming each other’s friend not only on the field but off the field.

“If we can do that and stick together, I think it will pay dividends down the road,” Brewer said.

Brewer preaches brotherhood at every practice, said incoming senior Andre White.

“Coach is really strong on doing everything as a team,” he said.

And the Wolves are responding well.

The team has bought into the theme, Brewer said, and their tight bond was solidified during a four-day preseason camp on Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson.

“It was a really, really, really good camp,” he said. “The kids worked hard and came together.”

Working together will be essential for the Wolves to have success this season, said senior Corbin Duxbury.

“Work hard, never give up and believe in your brother. That’s pretty much our motto we live by,” he said.

The team also grew close while lifting weights throughout the summer, senior Rydell Reinbold said. About 30 team members worked out consistently, he said.

“Our team is closer than ever and stronger than ever,” Reinbold said.

And Eagle River will reap the benefits of its offseason work on the gridiron, said senior Jachi Madubuko.

“We will be a lot more aggressive,” he said.

Working out together does more than develop muscle and camaraderie, Brewer said.

“The weight room also builds confidence,” he said.

The closeness shared between Eagle River’s varsity squad also extends to its junior varsity and C teams, Madubuko said.

“All these teams are close together,” he said. “Now we’re starting to build a program instead of just teams of good players.”
