Wolves open with South showdown

Lopsided defeat to last year’s state finalists is ‘motivation’
Eagle River senior Parker Eiler splits the defense during a scrimmage against Bartlett at the Chugiak Stampede on Saturday, Aug. 4 at Chugiak High.

Eagle River opens the 2012 prep football season against last year’s ASAA Large Schools state football runner-up South High.

And the 42-0 pounding dished out by the Wolverines in Week 8 last year is still fresh in Eagle River’s minds, said Wolves senior Rydell Reinbold.

“It’s motivation,” he said.

The game, which starts at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 11 at Anchorage Football Stadium, will serve as a good test for Eagle River, said head coach Jason Brewer.

And he knows the Wolverines will come ready to play.

“They went to the state championship last year. You can’t take anything away from them,” he said. “They’re in a program where they just rebuild year in and year out.”

Opening against South will force Eagle River to start the season at a high tempo, junior quarterback Peter Kott said.

“It makes us push hard the first week,” he said.

While plenty of time will be spent familiarizing themselves with South, Brewer said the Wolves need to focus on their own game heading into Week 1.

“We’re trying to take care of us,” he said.

Brewer said he wants his team to be aggressive on both sides of the ball.

Opening against a tough team like South will give the Wolves the opportunity to show the rest of the Cook Inlet Conference what they’re made of, said senior wide receiver Jeavonte Dunn.

“We’re ready to prove something this year,” he said.

The Wolves’ revamped offense under Brewer — a first-year head coach at Eagle River — will keep the Wolverines guessing, said junior tailback Ed Hall.

“They’re not gonna know what we’re running because it’s brand new,” he said.

Despite his school’s 0-6 all-time record against South, there’s no doubt in Reinbold’s mind that his teammates will be prepared for battle.

“I know we’re gonna be ready,” he said.
