Chugiak flaggers blank Wolves
Chugiak’s stingy defense kept the Wolves from reaching the end zone as the Mustangs blanked their crosstown rivals 19-0 in Cook Inlet Conference flag football action Tuesday, Aug. 21 at Eagle River.
“Defensively, we played a great game” Chugiak head coach Jon Schroeder said. “Offensively, it was a good confidence day being able to score three touchdowns.”
With the win, Chugiak — which lost its season opener 20-0 against Dimond on Aug. 18 — improved to 1-1. Eagle River, which lost 8-0 to West on Aug. 18, fell to 0-2.
After nearly two scoreless quarters, Hannah Puterbaugh scored to give Chugiak a 6-0 lead at the half.
Carly Metcalf took a shovel pass from Ashleigh Sitz on third and goal to put the Mustangs up by 12 in the fourth quarter.
Following Metcalf’s touchdown, Sammi McMullen picked off Eagle River’s Jessica Moore on the Wolves’ first play of the drive. The interception set up an 11-yard touchdown run by Kiera Byman to seal the victory for Chugiak.
The Mustangs’ defense was ready for everything Eagle River threw at them, said junior Sam Perez. Chugiak fought hard the entire game, she said.
“Today, we didn’t stop,” Perez said. “Everyone got aggressive.”
Though happy with the victory, Schroeder said Chugiak had prime scoring chances but came away empty handed too many times.
“We had the opportunity to score seven touchdowns,” he said. “The good news is we can improve on that.”
“Big plays” were the difference, Eagle River head coach Matt Turner said.
“A couple big plays is all,” he said. “A couple of, ‘How did they do that?’ plays.”
Though disappointed with the outcome, Turner said Eagle River played well in its first game against West.
“I’m super excited we played them so tight,” he said.
The same was true against Chugiak, he said.
“It was still a good battle,” Turner said. “We’re still learning. We’ve got a bunch of new people on varsity.”
The Wolves travel to Dimond on Friday, Aug. 24 at 5 p.m. before hosting East on Tuesday, Aug. 28 at 7:30 p.m.
Chugiak plays West on Saturday, Aug. 25 at Anchorage Football Stadium at 5 p.m. before hosting Bartlett on Tuesday, Aug. 28 at 8 p.m.
