The Chugiak Soccer Club Tsunami recently competed in the Alaska State Cup Finals soccer tournament in Kenai, where they posted a 2-0-1 record to claim the state championship for the U-12 girls division. The win qualifies the team for the Regional Soccer Tournament to be held in Hawaii next June.

The 2012 Alaska Youth Soccer State Cup ran from Aug. 1-5 at the Kenai City Fields. 38 teams played in the tournament with over 600 players participating in divisions ranging from U-12 (under 12) to U-17 for girls and U-18 for boys. Teams traveled from Fairbanks, Anchorage and Juneau to participate in this year’s competition.

The Tsunami girls played the Fairbanks Eclipse to a 2-2 tie after leading most of the game 2-0 to open the tournament, then beat the Cook Inlet Velocity team to earn a berth in the championship game against Eclipse.

The Chugiak girls led the championship 2-0 before Fairbanks came back to tie the game with less than 10 minutes to play. With less than three minutes to play, Nicole Bedwell scored on a breakaway pass from Megen Kilkenny to score the go-ahead goal in the 3-2 win.
