Friends of Nike Site Summit will hold a public tour of the historic Nike Hercules missile site on Saturday, Sept. 8. To register online, visit or sign up at the Alaska Veterans Museum no later than Sept. 1.

Two tours will be held, with one beginning at 9:30 a.m. and the other at 2 p.m. Each tour is limited to 40 participants, and advance reservations are required.

Tour participants will be able to speak with veterans who were stationed at the site, learn about the missiles and Alaska’s role in the Cold War.

From 1959 to 1979, Anchorage was guarded by three Nike Hercules missile sites. The only one still standing can be seen above Eagle River above Arctic Valley.

Cost for the tour is $30 for general admission, $25 for students and veterans.
