Mustangs remain winless

Chugiak to face undefeated South Friday

High-flying West raced out to a 35-7 halftime lead and never looked back in a 48-13 Cook Inlet Conference football win over Chugiak on Saturday, Aug. 25 at Anchorage Football Stadium.

“We weren’t playing with a passion,” said Chugiak quarterback David Mayhew, who threw a pair of touchdown passes to tight end Matt Oldenkamp in the game.

Chugiak fell to 0-3 overall and 0-2 in the CIC.

Conor Feckley threw three touchdown passes and ran for another for West, which improved to 2-1 overall and 2-0 in the CIC. The Eagles also got a pair of touchdown runs from Lincoln Tulimasaelii, who finished with 133 yards on just eight carries.

Oldenkamp said the loss doesn’t mean the Mustangs are going to give up on the season.

“It’s only the third game of the season,” he said. “We’ve still got five conference games to go.”

Oldenkamp scored on a 64-yard catch-and-run from Mayhew in the second quarter and again on a 3-yard grab as time expired in the game.

Mayhew, a junior in his first year with the varsity, had his most effective game in three starts under center, going 6-for-11 for 97 yards with no interceptions. Dane Prince was Chugiak’s leading rusher with 37 yards on seven carries.

West outgained the Mustangs 465-188 in total yards and didn’t commit a turnover. Chugiak couldn’t say the same, as the Mustangs fumbled six times — losing three — and had an interception.

“We can’t give them field position like that,” said Mustangs head coach Duncan Shackelford.

The contest featured a bizarre finish, as officials would not allow the Mustangs to attempt a point-after try following Oldenkamp’s second touchdown. As Chugiak protested, one official told the team’s coaching staff that, since the game wasn’t close, an extra point try “doesn’t matter.”

However, that’s not exactly true, as defensive points allowed do figure into tie-breakers when it comes to selecting playoff teams following the regular season.

For Chugiak to get back into the playoff race, Mayhew said the team will need to come out with more intensity against South (3-0 overall and CIC) on Friday, Aug. 31 at Chugiak at 7 p.m.

“We’ve just got to come back this week and practice hard, then come out Friday and play hard,” he said.
