Scholarships – It's never too early to start thinking about them
School is back in session, the fall sports season is in high gear, and the homework is abundant. While many are not yet thinking of graduation, which seems so far away to a 17-year-old, some kids are dialed in and already tuning up their graduation folders. Now is the time for parents to review what your kids have done so far, and encourage them to go and talk to their counselors in preparation of scholarship season — which is right around the corner.
Numerous non-profits in Chugiak and Eagle River offer scholarships to members of our community. Some scholarships are traditional renewable scholarships, and others are non-traditional, which offer money for technical educations and even for adults going back to school. The Elks, Lions, Chamber, VFW, Women in Business, and a number of others offer scholarships.
Now is the time to either go and talk to your kids’ counselor, or have your kids go and talk to them. Ask what type of scholarships they know are available, or even what were offered (and by who) last year. This is the time to do your “homework”; look at specific scholarships and find out what your child can do to boost their chance of getting one of these scholarships. This day and age school is expensive and the competition for scholarships can be tough; it is never too early to start preparing.
