"1960 school bus schedule"

Wednesday, September 26, 2012 - 22:28

From a column in the Knik Arm Courier, Aug. 31, 1960:

A bus schedule published in the local weekly newspaper gives some insight into the difficulty area high school students endured in order to get to school in Anchorage during those early years in our history. This is the schedule:

Once again, there will be two buses to transport high school students from Chugiak to Anchorage. Mr. Jesse Nichols has drawn up the schedules which will be as follows:

One bus will arrive at mile 23, terminal point of its run, the halfway house, at 7:10 a.m. and pick up students in Peters Creek and on the Birchwood Loop.

The second bus will arrive at the terminal point on the Eagle River Homestead Road (the Hage residence) at 7:04 a.m. and pick up passengers in Eagle River and on the highway as far as Chugiak School.

Both buses will then continue to the Junior High School, where all Senior High School students will board one bus for the remainder of the trip.

On the return trip the buses will proceed to the Chick inn at mile 14, where the passengers will then board their respective buses for the final leg of the run.

Those who desire a more exact time as when the bus will pick up passengers in their particular area may obtain this information by calling Mr. Nichols at HO-2-5547.

(Editor’s note: An item in last week’s column implied Eagle River Elementary opened in 1954. It opened in 1961.)
