Eagle River people — on a mission!

Wednesday, September 26, 2012 - 21:48

Eagle River is full of energetic people on a mission to ‘love their neighbor’! As followers of Jesus Christ, they take seriously Jesus’ teaching to all of us when He said: “For I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took me in; I was naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you visited Me; I was in prison and you came to Me ... and assuredly I say to you, inasmuch as you did this to the least of my brethren you did this to Me.” (Matthew 25)

How do the people in our community serve and love their neighbor? If you watch and pay attention, you will see the truly awesome and limitless ways we serve in the Lord’s name!

Here’s just a sample of the limitless ways that we serve others, within our families, our community, and even around the world.

Our International Missions

Literally hundreds of Eagle River people have gone on missions to help poverty-stricken people around the world! For example: Mike went to the parched Sudan to drill clean water wells. Lori went to Haiti to teach impoverished children. Isaac went to Cameroon to give life-saving medical care. St. Andrews’ teens went to Jamaica to rebuild needed housing. Susanna is going to Brazil for Habitat for Humanity. Clare went to Tanzania to teach Christian education to children. United Methodist teens went to Bethel to build and run a day camp. Kate went to Uganda to teach and assist poor children. Daniel went to Japan for five months and assisted after the tsunami. Brian and Janell with their three kids served India’s flood victims. Ten to twenty Peters Creek Christian Center people served African orphans. Rebecca is in South Africa teaching the Christian faith. Twelve St. John’s teens will care for the homeless in Los Angeles in December. Pastors Lance and Lynette are serving people in the Dominican Republic.

So many soldiers serve with a spirit of peacemakers for all. And this is just a sample list to highlight all the inspiring mission work done by our local people around the world — all to love their neighbor!

Our Local Missions

Of course, we can certainly serve in missions right here in our local community — and there are hundreds of people who work and volunteer every day in our Eagle River missions. Here again is just a partial sample of the numerous local missions here locally:

— Pregnancy Resource Center

— Food Banks at three local churches

— The Salvation Army

— Alaska Correctional Ministries

— Newborns In Need

— Alcoholics Anonymous

— Love INC of Eagle River

— Father John, Anna and Deacon Fred praying with the women at Hiland Prison . . . and so many more!

Whether it’s serving widows, women in crisis pregnancies, or ministering to those in prison, we are loving our local neighbors in many ways.

Our ‘Family’ Missions

Let us never forget that the great mission work to ‘love our neighbors’ surely begins with our family members! This is a very important Christian value. Mothers and fathers who work tirelessly and selflessly to raise their children perform a great mission indeed. And husbands and wives who love and respect each other perform sacred work in the Lord’s name. This is often humble, daily self-sacrifice that is barely noticed in the world. Yet thank God for this great love within families. It the foundation of our world!
