Prep athletes earn accolades
Smith sweeps again
For a second straight week, Chugiak’s Maddie Smith won all four events to win all-around at a gymnastics meet against Eagle River and Bartlett on Friday, Sept. 21.
The Mustangs won the meet with 90.1 points. Bartlett scored 63.25 points in second and Eagle River was third with 32.7.
Chugiak swept the first three all-around places with Emily Romero finishing second and Stacey Allum in third.
Eagle River’s Kallan Johnson was fourth all-around.
Friedli wins invite
Chugiak’s Kaitlin Friedli scored 358.65 points to win the 1-meter diving competition at the Bartlett/Chugiak Swimming and Diving Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 22.
Fellow Mustang Grant Ensign won the boys’ 200 free.
Eagle River’s Julia Geskey, Courtney Fox-Singh, Kate Mondl and Jordyn Bruce won the girls 400 free relay.
Chugiak’s Sammy Burke took second in the girls 200 free and 100 backstroke.
Emmie Jennings placed second in the 200 IM for the Mustangs and Geskey was third. Geskey also placed third in the 100 breaststroke.
Mondl finished third in the 500 free.
Blaise Fox-Icarro took second in the boys 200 IM for the Wolves. Fox-Icarro also finished second in the 100 butterfly ahead of Chugiak’s Ethan Espe in third.
Jonah Hennings-Booth was third in the 500 free for Chugiak.
Chugiak wins tri-meet
Chugiak’s girls scored 118 points to win a tri-meet over Service (108) and Eagle River (97) on Friday, Sept. 21.
The Cougars scored 135 points to win the boys meet with Chugiak (114) in second and Eagle River (79) in third.
On the girls side, Jennings (200 free, 100 back), Burke (50 free), Friedli (diving) and Abby Blackstone (100 fly) earned individual wins for Chugiak. Mondl (200 IM) and Bruce (100 free) won events for Eagle River.
Fox-Icarro (200 free) got the lone individual win for Eagle River’s boys. Espe (50 free) and Shawn Fugere (diving) turned in first-place performances for the Mustangs.
Chugiak wins Copper bracket
Chugiak defeated Skyview 25-14, 22-15, 16-14 to win the Cooper bracket consolation title at the West Spiketacular tournament Saturday, Sept. 22.
Kathleen Gill was named to the All-Tournament team. Gill was the most consistent player in terms of passing and defense, Mustangs’ head coach Bobbi Mason said.
Setter Rachel Topf also had consistent play and made smart choices, Mason said.
Due to injuries, Chugiak doesn’t have a solid lineup, Mason said, so the Mustangs had to learn to play multiple positions.
“It was more of a learning experience,” she said.
Eagle River finished tied for third in the Bronze bracket.
Setter Elexa Walker racked up 66 assists, five aces and 23 digs for the tournament and was named to the All-Tournament team.
Outside hitter Morgen Wohrle had 24 kills and 36 digs over the weekend. Libero Lucy Thomas was 100 percent on serving and recorded 44 digs for the Wolves.
Eagle River’s middle hitter Gabbi LeCates amassed 11 kills, five blocks and five aces in the tournament.
Chugiak 21, South 6
Nikki Kennedy caught two touchdown passes to lead Chugiak past South 21-6 on Monday, Sept. 24. Mustangs’ quarterback Ashleigh Sitz finished with 189 yards passing. Third-place Chugiak improved to 7-4 with three games left in the regular season.
Service 26, Eagle River 7
Gaby Mordini scored the Wolves’ lone touchdown in a 26-7 loss to Service on Monday, Sept. 24. The fifth-place Wolves fell to 5-7.
Chugiak 31, Bartlett 6
Ashleigh Sitz threw two touchdowns and ran for another to lead Chugiak past Bartlett 31-6 on Saturday, Sept. 22 at Anchorage Football Stadium. Holly Brehmer added a 65-yard touchdown run for the Mustangs.
Eagle River 25, East 0
Lauren Frost threw a touchdown and ran for one in Eagle River’s 25-0 win over East on Saturday, Sept. 22 at Dimond Alumni Field.
Scout Warners was on the receiving end of Frost’s touchdown pass, Alyssa Randall ran for a score and Gaby Mordini scored on a 70-yard run for the Wolves.
Dimond 22, Eagle River 6
Dimond beat host Eagle River 22-6 on Thursday, Sept. 20 in CIC flag football.
