The words of Nehemiah son of Hakaliah: In the month of Kislev in the twentieth year, while I was in the citadel of Susa, Hanani, one of my brothers, came from Judah with some other men, and I questioned them about the Jewish remnant that had survived the exile, and also about Jerusalem. They said to me, “Those who survived the exile and are back in the province are in great trouble and disgrace. The wall of Jerusalem is broken down, and its gates have been burned with fire.” When I heard these things, I sat down and wept. For some days I mourned and fasted and prayed before the God of heaven.
— Nehemiah 1:1-4 (NIV)
Nehemiah is the cupbearer to the Persian King in the winter palace at Susa. He hears a bad report about his homeland. The people who were left in exile are few in number but they are a disgrace. Even though they saw their homeland in great despair, they failed to do anything about it. Nehemiah was moved to tears and he wept, mourned and fasted, praying to God for his people.
As people of God, sometimes we forget about the needs of our community. We fail to pray for the people who are struggling with life issues. Their homes are in need of repair, their children are acting out, their marriages are in shambles, they have no jobs, and they cannot make rent. They really feel forgotten! What did Nehemiah do? Nehemiah addressed the needs and focused on the rebuilding of the community. He made it possible for them to rebuild the walls of the city. By examining the areas where the walls were broken down, he organized the people to rebuild the wall in front of their property making sure that they had what was needed to get the job done.
As people of God, we need to take a look at our community and become more aware of the needs of the people. Let us come together in our community to let our neighbors know that God has not forgotten them. Let us pray:
Heavenly Father we stand in awe at what you can do for your people! We are expecting a miracle from the great provider by asking that you meet the needs of our beautiful community and the people that reside in it. Lord, we confess that we have not always been kind and forgiving but we know that you will forgive us for all our sins if we ask. So we seek forgiveness for our sins and commit our service to you this day in Jesus name.
