Homestead Elementary principal wins award
Homestead Elementary principal Barbara Nagengast sits at her desk Monday, Oct. 8. The Alaska Association of Elementary School Principals selected Nagengast as the National Distinguished Principal for 2012.

Barbara Nagengast is used to being the top administrator at Homestead Elementary. Now she’s at the top of her class in the state, too.

The Alaska Association of Elementary School Principals named Nagengast as the 2012 National Distinguished Principal. Receiving the award from her fellow principals was a great honor, Nagengast said.

“It’s recognition from your peers,” she said. “That just in and of itself has a special touch to it.”

This marks the 29th year for the statewide award. Next week, Nagengast will travel to Washington, D.C., and join other top administrators to share ideas, discuss current issues and be recognized during an award ceremony.

Nagengast said her supportive employees and parents all had a hand in her winning the award.

“You don’t do it by yourself,” she said. “I’ve been privileged with such a wonderful staff.”

This is Nagengast’s sixth year as Homestead’s leader and her 17th as a principal. Previously, she was the principal at Spring Hill Elementary and Rabbit Creek Elementary in Anchorage.

Nagengast, who’s taught all ages from second-graders to college students, said the joy elementary students get from learning is one reason why she loves educating younger kids.

“Watching them change and evolve as they are here,” she said. “It’s really precious.”

Her job also comes with great responsibility.

“We try to set the groundwork,” Nagengast said. “Give them what they need to be successful in life.”

Nagengast said the honor is a reflection of the great work being done throughout the Anchorage School District.

“It’s not me,” she said. “I’m representative of a lot of wonderful, wonderful things that go on every day all across Anchorage.”
