Postseason honors pile up
Although the prep football season is over, there’s still plenty of football left for some of the area’s top high school players.
A total of 11 Chugiak and Eagle River players will compete in the upcoming 36th Annual Al Aska Shriner’s North-South Football Classic, which will be held Saturday, Nov. 3 at The Dome in Anchorage. Selected to play for Eagle River are seniors Kevin Gilliland, Andre White, Josh Oberlander, Jachi Madubuko, Parker Eiler and Corbin Duxbury; making the trip for the Mustangs will be Justin and Dakota Benzel, Roger Jorgensen, Austin Boone and Bryce Thompson.
The game begins at 3 p.m., with a girls’ flag football game set for 10 a.m. and the small-schools game at Noon.
The game is a showcase for the state’s top senior football players.
At least four local players will also travel to Auburn, Wash., later this month for the Tanoa Bowl, an annual showcase for top players in the Northwest. Set to join the Team Alaska roster are Eagle River’s Madubuko and senior defensive back Jeavonte Dunn, along with Chugiak’s Justin Benzel, Kenny Pegues and Matt Oldenkamp. Eagle River junior running back Ed Hall was also chosen for the traveling team, but will be unable to play due to surgery, said Wolves coach Jason Brewer.
Dunn, Pegues (offensive line) and Oldenkamp (tight end) were all recently selected first-team All-State by the Alaska Football Coaches Association, while senior linebacker Justin Benzel was a second-team selection. Pegues and Oldenkamp are both juniors.
