"Big Xmas Celebration Planned Here"
From the Nov. 25, 1970 issue of the Knik Arm Courier, and edited by the Memory Retrievers:
Plans for an Old Fashioned Community Christmas Celebration have been growing by leaps and bounds this past year. The proposed celebration is being sponsored by no one particular organization, but by an “ad hoc” committee of local residents.
Plans to date call for a five-day celebration starting Saturday, Dec. 19 and ending up with a Grand Finale on Dec. 24.
On each night — with the exception of Sunday — between the hours of 6 p.m. and 10 p.m., Santa will ride through the communities of the Greater Chugiak Area in a horse drawn sleigh. He will be followed by a group of carolers riding on a low-bed trailer drawn by a truck.
Santa and the carolers’ schedule is: Saturday, Dec. 19 in Eklutna and Peters Creek; Sunday, Dec. 20 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the Birchwood area; Monday, Dec. 21 in the Eagle River shopping area; Tuesday, Dec. 22 in Old Chugiak and Fire Lake; and on Wednesday, Dec. 23 they will catch any area they may have missed earlier in the week.
To date, plans for the Grand Finale on Christmas Eve call for everyone to gather at the Eagle River Shopping Center. There will be a huge tree covered with decorations made by children from all of the area schools. Banners across the highway at Peters Creek and Eagle River will announce the celebration.
The Chugiak High School band and choir, plus choirs from all the local churches, have been invited to perform. Heated bleachers with seating capacity of over 130 people will be provided for the band and choirs.
Special lights will be strung up for the occasion, and snowmachine races and rides will be provided by the Women’s Sno-mobile Club. The newly-formed Frontier Rider Saddle Club has been invited to parade.
The celebration will start around 2 p.m.
