Chugiak sees increased interest in bowling
When first-year head coach Teri Schneider took over Chugiak’s bowling program, her main goal was to increase interest.
She accomplished that before the first match of the season.
After playing last year two girls short of a full team, Chugiak has 13 boys and eight girls on the 2012-13 roster.
“Last year, I didn’t have enough for a whole team,” said Schneider, who served as assistant coach last season.
Schneider said she’s thrilled to see a full Mustangs lineup.
“I wanted to see Chugiak build its team,” she said.
The new interest benefited the program, Schneider said, because it forced tryouts for varsity.
“Everybody had to bowl for their position this year,” she said. “You had to work for it.”
Seven returners are back for the Mustangs, Schneider said. Steven Wehr, Jackson Page and Matt Remer make up the returning boys while Jerzy Ellanna, Mariah Schiefer, Josselynn Curry and Ally Weitz are back on the girls side.
The team has also added 2007 Chugiak graduate Donny Washburn as assistant coach.
“The kids like having Donny,” Schneider said. “It’s been fun.”
Schneider said she couldn’t ask for a better group of bowlers than the team she has this season.
“I really am very lucky,” she said. “They’re a good bunch of kids.”
Everyone has a great attitude, Schneider said.
“They want to learn how to bowl,” she said. “The kids on open are just as competitive as the kids on varsity.”
The team doesn’t have any set goals, Schneider said, but the boys would like to finish higher than last place like last season. Given their talent, the Mustangs should be able to achieve that goal, Schneider said.
“They have that potential,” she said. “We have a good team.”
Schneider said she’ll continue to seek interested bowlers.
“It’s kind of a dying sport,” she said. “People don’t realize it’s there.”
Chugiak takes on West today (Thursday, Nov. 29) at Eagle River Bowl.
