Dennis Lozano

Wednesday, December 5, 2012 - 19:00

Longtime Eagle River resident Dennis J. Lozano died at home Nov. 30, 2012 with his wife of 40 years, Marie, at his side.

The cause of death was a rare form of bone marrow cancer. In 2009, after an extended hospital stay in San Francisco, Dennis was sent home just before Christmas expecting to live only a few months.

“Those extra three years were a marvel to all who loved him,” his family said.

The disease transformed recently into the leukemia that ultimately killed him.

After graduating from Sacred Heart High School in San Francisco, Calif., Dennis worked as a Teamster. He and Marie moved to Alaska in 1974, a year after they married, and over the years, he worked in construction, was an electrician, and fished commercially on the Yukon River and in Prince William Sound. He loved working on the water and the “rough and tumble” of the fishing life.

He also fell in love with dog mushing, and was befriended by many of the early Iditarod racers. He ran and finished the race himself in 1987, an accomplishment he was justly proud of.

He built a log cabin in his yard in the 1980’s, and reassembled it near Denali National Park, which he loved to visit. Recently, he and his son and son-in-law built another cabin near Healy for all three families to enjoy.

“He was a much beloved husband, father, and ‘Papa,’” his family said. “Many people in Alaska and San Francisco area loved him and deeply valued his laughter, stories, and friendship.”

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Beatrice Lozano.

He is survived by his wife, Marie; son, Dominic (and Andra); grand daughter, Angela (and Eric) Lawson; and five grandsons, Dustin, Tanner and Noah Lozano and Aiden and Nathen Lawson.

There will be a memorial service for Dennis at St. Andrew Catholic Church in Eagle River at 4 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 6. In lieu of flowers, the family would greatly appreciate a contribution to either the American Cancer Society or

Arrangements by Janssen Funeral Homes.
