Soldier charged with murder
Police have charged a Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson soldier who recently returned from Afghanistan with the murder of his wife.
Spc. David M. Lopez, 24, of Rochester, N.Y., was arrested Thursday, Dec. 13 after police found his wife, Sara, deceased inside the couple’s apartment at 140 Oklahoma Street in Anchorage Wednesday night. Lopez was charged with murder and terroristic threatening stemming from an incident prior to the alleged murder.
According to police, Lopez allegedly threatened workers at the Office of Children’s Services on the evening of Wednesday, Dec. 12. Shortly after OCS staff called police to report the threats, Lopez called 911 to report that he thought he’d shot his wife.
Police said Sara Lopez died at the scene of a gunshot wound to the head.
According to the Army, Lopez enlisted in November 2009. He attended basic training at Ft. Benning, Ga., before being assigned to JBER in October 2010.
He is a member of the 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division. He deployed with the brigade to Afghanistan in December 2011 and returned in October.
