Date Nut Bread

¾ cup chopped nuts

1 cup chopped dates

1 ½ teaspoon baking soda

¼ cup shortening

¾ cup boiling water

2 eggs

½ teaspoon vanilla

1 cup sugar

1 ½ cups sifted flour


Combine nuts, soda and salt in mixing bowl. Add shortening and boiling water. Allow mixture to stand 15 minutes. Stir to blend. Beat eggs slightly. Add vanilla. Stir in sugar and sifted flour. Add to date mixture. DO NOT OVERMIX. Place in greased 9x3x5-inch loaf pan. Bake 1 hour at 350 degrees. Cool before slicing.
