Eagle River girls bowl over Mustangs; Wolves boys complete sweep
The Eagle River girls dealt a crushing blow to rival Chugiak’s Anchorage Scholastic Bowling League title hopes with a 29-6 win on Thursday, Jan. 24 at Center Bowl.
The third-place Wolves got a monster effort from Shannon Jones, who posted the week’s top individual score with a 246, helping the Wolves to a season-high 922 scratch game as a team. Jones’ 246 ranks second among individual girls scores posted this season. Jones wasn’t the only Wolves bowler with a hot hand. Carly Meacham led Eagle River with a 176 average in 11 games to lead the team. Jones finished with a 172 average in 14 games, while Mykela Carroll posted a 158 average. Chugiak’s Mariah Schieffer led all local girls with a 177 average.
Chugiak’s girls entered the match with an 11-point lead over Dimond. But the Lynx picked up a 31-4 win over West to take a 14-point lead in the standings. The Wolves remain in third, eight points back of Chugiak.
The showdown between Chugiak and Eagle River went to the Wolves on the boys’ side as well, with the squad from Yosemite Drive posting a 26-9 win over the third-place Mustangs. Fourth-place Eagle River was led by Josh Bogowith (187 average, 14 games) and Bobby Leibbrand (183 average, 14 games). Stephen Wehr posted a 175 average in his 13 games bowled for Chugiak, which remains in third place.
Teams will take part in the annual Shootout Tournament today (Jan. 31) at Center Bowl.
The final event of the prep season will be the Final Bowl-Off on Feb. 7 at Eagle River Bowl. Those matches will be used to determine the final season standings.
