Spikers fare well Outside

Volleyball players from Chugiak and Eagle River High teamed up with athletes from four other schools at the 27th Annual SCVA Las Vegas Volleyball Classic over the President’s Day weekend.

Among those making the trip south with the Alaska Volleyball Association’s U17 team were Eagle River standouts Elexa Walker, Tess Anderson and Kyla Meadow, along with Chugiak’s Rachel Gregg.

During the three-day tournament, the Alaska team (which also included players from Colony, Palmer, Dimond and Kodiak) moved up from a 138 seed to no. 99 and went 2-0 in their subdivision playoff matches. On the tournament’s final day, Team Alaska defeated Hoover (Calif.) 2-0 and VBC of Southern California 2-1.

During the tournament, the team also defeated squads from Texas, Hawaii and California.

Gregg finished the tournament with 16 blocks, while Walker compiled 25 assists and 16 digs over three days of competition.
