Eagle River Iditarod stretch canceled
The annual ceremonial Iditarod run from Anchorage to Eagle River was cancelled due to a lack of snowpack.
“There is literally no snow on the trail along Fort Rich,” said local VFW post officer and Iditarod checkpoint manager Swerve Petty.
Snow levels in Southcentral Alaska were so low that the Iditarod was also moving its official race start to Fairbanks, according to another story in the Feb. 27, 2003 edition, which included a preview of the upcoming race.
Fred Meyer sets opening date
The Fred Meyer Corporation announced it would open its new Eagle River store April 2, 2003. The new store’s exterior was nearly complete, according to an item on page 3 of the Feb. 27 Star, which noted tenants in the new building were expected to open around the same time.
