Sometimes the struggles of life can seem unbearable. In just 24 short hours, we’ve got to figure out how to manage work or school, exercise, family, friends, relationships, entertainment, social media…the list goes on and on! Simply getting up in the morning can be a real chore when what we’d really like to do is stay under the covers and hide from the world all day.
Even when we’re not facing undue stress, the simple burden of living in a world that often seems cold and uncaring can feel like more than we can bear. It’s easy to feel isolated or depressed, and even easier to feel like we’re alone with our thoughts — as if nobody could possibly understand what we’re going through.
These lonely thoughts can be overwhelming. To believe you’re living an existence without meaning is perhaps the most painful of all emotions. It’s a dark, powerful feeling that has the destructive ability to turn us against ourselves, to make us believe there’s no fate worse than to continue living one more horrible second alone.
But guess what? Everyone feels that way sometimes. Everyone gets lonely, everyone feels overwhelmed, everyone cries. It’s normal...and you’re not alone.
With this simple recognition, you can understand that in your time of greatest loneliness there’s an opportunity to find common ground with those who seem so far away in spirit. The simple act of speaking out about our feelings binds us to those with whom we share them, and in doing so can instantly lift the burden that only minutes before seemed so crushing. Reach out to someone, and they’re certain to reach back. Because while it’s human to feel alone, it’s even more human to want to feel close to someone.
If you feel your life is simply too much to bear, the easiest way to lift the invisible weight from your chest is to tell someone how you feel. It doesn’t even have to be someone close to you — although that helps. It can be a coworker, a teacher, a friend, a doctor, a priest or a coach. It can be an aunt or a cousin or an old battle buddy. The bottom line is that if you say something to someone, you’re guaranteed to have less weight on your shoulders. Because that person will be there to help carry it for you.
Please speak out if you’re feeling lost or hopeless. Life is far too short and precious to destroy. Always remember that the dark feelings are only temporary, and tomorrow will always bring the promise of new hope and sunshine into your life. Never, ever give up!
