Local track squads gain athletes
Contrary to its name, there was nothing “mini” about the local teams who participated in the first official track and field meet of the season.
A combined 155 athletes were on Chugiak and Eagle River High’s rosters as the season got under way with The Mini on Friday and Saturday, March 22-23 at The Dome.
Though hectic at times, having 83 teammates has been an enjoyable new experience for Eagle River senior Scout Warners, a four-year trackster.
“There’s so many people at practice,” she said. “It’s awesome.”
Wolves’ head coach Matt Turner expects that number to increase with the addition of a few more runners this week, he said.
Warners led the Wolves with a first-place finish in the high jump Friday. She tied with Bartlett’s Taylir Kueter having both cleared 5 feet.
Kueter is a surname Warners knows well.
Warners was second to 2012 Bartlett graduate Morgan Kueter — Taylir’s older sister — at last year’s Cook Inlet Conference meet. Warners, who owns the ERHS record of 5 feet, 1 inch, was pleased to begin the year just an inch away from her personal best.
“That’s a good start to the season,” she said.
Other top-three place winners for Eagle River included Kate Mondl (second in the 1,600-meter run) and Rydell Reinbold (third in shot put).
Chugiak seniors Tyler Rohde and Chris Kveseth also started the season off well.
Defending Class 4A state hurdle champion Rohde won the 110-meter hurdles and placed second in the 100-meter dash in front of Kveseth in third.
Kveseth also won the 800-meter run.
“That was a good race for him,” Mustangs’ assistant coach Melissa Hall said.
Chugiak’s roster increased to 71 as of last week, Hall said.
“It keeps growing and growing,” she said.
Having a team full of freshmen who are eager to learn bodes well for program, Hall said.
“They’re really a good group of listeners,” she said.
Teams will see where they stack up against the rest of the conference when they meet Saturday, March 30 at the ASD 8x8, which will be held at The Dome from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m.
