Two local scouts — Mitchell Wilder and Alex Medeiros — received their Eagle Awards recently.

Wilder is the son of Tom and Marcy Wilder and brother of Jessica Wilder. He began his scouting experience in 2001 as a Tiger Cub in Newport, RI. He continued through Wolf, Bear and Webelos 1 in Colorado Springs, Colo., and finished Cub Scouting by earning his Arrow of Light award with the Webelos 2 of Pack 224 in Eagle River. Mitchell joined Troop 219 in 2006 and has been active ever since.

Wilder has completed over 50 camping events, and has earned two 100-below awards, one 200-below award, a 50-miler patch, and the Mile Swim award. He is a graduate of National Youth Leadership Training, a member of the Order of the Arrow, and joined the 2010 Alaska contingent to the National Scout Jamboree. Mitchell’s favorite scouting event was taking his dad to the Philmont Scout Ranch in 2011. His leadership positions have included Patrol Leader, Quartermaster, Senior Patrol Leader, Troop Guide, and Junior Assistant Scoutmaster.

Outside of scouting, Wilder’s other interests include swimming, ultimate Frisbee, archery, playing mandolin, computer gaming, and making people laugh. He was captain of the Chugiak High School Swim Team, President and Treasurer of Key Club, a member of the National Honor Society, and the 2013 Chugiak Prom King.

He has completed 326 service hours, mostly through scouting. His Eagle Project was the construction of a woodshed and benches for the Yukla Yurt at the Eagle River Nature Center, with material and financial support provided by the Eagle River Spenard Builders’ Supply and the Elmendorf Officers’ Spouses’ Club

Wilder will graduate from Chugiak High School on May 16, 2013. He is ranked second in his class, and he plans to pursue a chemical engineering degree at the University of Washington.

Medeiros is the son of Manuel and Stacey Medeiros and brother of Nate. Alex began his scouting career as Wolf earning his Arrow of Light on April 2006 with Pack 224 in Eagle River. Alex joined Troop 230 in May 2006. Alex is a member of the Order of Arrow. Active in his troop, Alex was a Scribe, Den Chief, Patrol Leader, Instructor and Junior Assistant Scoutmaster.

Medeiros has enjoyed the adventures he has had during his scouting career. Some of his favorite activities were traveling to Katmai and the Valley of 10,000 Smokes, receiving his 100 below patch during many winter camp outs, Lake Creek for fly-in fishing, and Seward polar bear dip and canoeing in the ocean.

He was active at Chugiak High, where he was captain of the wrestling team, participated in football, track and field, and Ultimate Frisbee. He is still active as a competitive wrestler and coach for the Chugach Eagles Wrestling Club. He is also an active member of the Key Club.

Medeiros’s Eagle Scout project was to inventory, catalog and organize the entire Eagle River Pop Warner equipment trailer. He accomplished this project with help from his Troop, friends and family.

He will graduate May 16, 2013, third in his class. He will be attending University of Alaska Fairbanks to major in petroleum engineering with a minor in electrical engineering.
