Underclassmen shine at freshmen/sophomore meet
Chugiak and Eagle River High tracksters combined for five individual wins and four winning relays at the freshmen/sophomore meet Saturday, April 27 at The Dome.
Eagle River’s Kit Hoog, who was one of four boys to win two individual events, led all local athletes with wins in the 400-meter and 800-meter run. Hoog ran the 400 in 52.96 seconds, edging Dimond’s Cedarian Clayton Brunelle by just 5 hundredths of a second.
The 800 was another close race. Hoog’s time of 2:08.47 put him 0.21 seconds ahead of West’s Larkin Lynch in second.
Chugiak’s Ty Jordan won the 1,600 in 4:42.93.
The Mustangs also had two individual winners on the girls side. Hannah Booher won the 3,200 in 12:48.31, nearly 12 seconds ahead of Service’s Megan Bauer in second. Kaitlyn Gallagher took first the discus with a heave of 90 feet, 7 inches.
Wasilla’s Peggy Mathis and Dimond’s Chrisalyn Johnson led the girls with three individual wins apiece. Mathis took first in the 200, 400 and 800, while Johnson won the triple jump, high jump and 100 hurdles.
Chugiak swept the 4x200 relay. The girls team of Kelly McBryde, Hannah Babin, Alicia Reitz and Brandy Bookout ran 1:53.20, while the boys team of Curtis Bringhurst, William Casey, Dillon Pratt and Michael Williams turned in a winning time of 1:36.64.
Chugiak also placed first in the boys 4x400 relay. Casey, Bringhurst, Jordan and Karl Berg won by more than 19 seconds ahead of second-place South.
Eagle River’s Dreanna Owens, Allonna Walker, Shayna Wolery and Nikki Boggs won the girls 4x400 coming in more than 17 seconds ahead of second-place Wasilla.
Walker had a pair of second-place finishes in the 800 and 1,600, and Boggs finished second in the 400.
The Wolves’ Derek Ruckle placed third in the boys 300 hurdles.
Babin took third in the 100 and 100 hurdles, and Bookout placed third in the 400 for Chugiak.
Other top three finishers for Chugiak’s girls included McBryde (third in 300 hurdles), Gallagher (third in shot put) and Samantha Cooper (second in triple jump).
