Eagle River’s Mackenzie Smith, a 15-year-old gymnast who competes for Denali Gymnastics in Wasilla, recently competed at the USA Gymnastics Junior National Championships in Minneapolis, Minn.

Smith, who attends Eagle River High, is a Level 10 gymnast who competed at the Junior C level, finishing 55th overall. Smith scored a 8.95 on vault, 8.25 on uneven bars, 7.35 on the beam and 9.0 on the floor exercise. She said getting to compete at the national championships was a thrill.

“It was incredible being around all these amazing gymnasts,” she said.

This is Smith’s first year competing at Level 10, which is the highest level aside from Elite — which includes athletes who compete at the international level.

Smith qualified for Junior Nationals by finishing third at the Region 2 championships in Seattle. She said she plans to compete for Eagle River High’s gymnastics team in the fall and eventually would like to get a college scholarship for gymnastics.
