‘11 CHS grad signs with Western Washington
Chugiak’s Colby Mitchell throws down two of his team-high 16 points during Chugiak’s 56-53 Cook Inlet Conference loss to South on Feb. 7, 2011 in Anchorage. Mitchell, a 2011 CHS grad, recently signed to play basketball at NCAA Division II Western Washington University.

Former Chugiak High boys basketball standout Colby Mitchell will be coming home.

Mitchell, a 6-foot-7, 220-pound forward, recently signed a National Letter of Intent to play hoops at Division II Western Washington University, which makes at least two trips a season to Alaska as part of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.

Mitchell, a 2011 Chugiak grad, spent the past two years at Mount Hood Community College in Oregon, where he averaged a team-high 13.6 points per game last season as a sophomore. Mitchell also grabbed 7.3 rebounds per game and shot 51 percent from the floor.

In a press release announcing the signing, Western Washington coach Tony Dominguez said he liked Mitchell’s all-around game.

“He brings a lot of toughness and athleticism to our program. He also has some intangibles that we feel our team was needing moving forward,” Dominguez said.

A multi-sport athlete at Chugiak, Mitchell was a first team all-state defensive back when the Mustangs reached the state title game in 2009. He was also named a third team All-State basketball performer as a senior, leading Chugiak in both scoring (18 ppg) and rebounding (10 rpg).

Mitchell will be joining a Western Washington team that’s in rebuilding mode after graduating three starters from a team that went 31-3 and reached the Division II Elite Eight.

The Vikings play in the GNAC, which includes the University of Alaska-Anchorage and University of Alaska-Fairbanks.
