Softball teams meet in postseason
Chugiak opened the Cook Inlet Conference softball tournament with two wins Tuesday, May 21, ensuring a berth to the large schools state tournament May 31 and June 1 at Cartee Fields in Anchorage.
The top four CIC and Railbelt teams make state. The Mustangs can’t finish any worse than third in the conference.
Eagle River faced Dimond in an elimination game Wednesday, May 22, but a score was not available when the Star went to press.
Pitching keyed Chugiak’s victories Tuesday night at Albrecht Fields.
Katy Bakker threw a one-hitter in the Mustangs’ 12-0 win over Eagle River in the first round. Carly Metcalf then pitched a two-hitter in Chugiak’s 2-0 win over West.
“We rode their arms tonight,” Mustangs’ head coach Jim Huber said.
Chugiak played top-seeded East on Wednesday, May 22, but a score was not available when the Star went to press.
Against the Wolves, Rachel Gregg went 2-for-3 with a triple and drove in a run for Chugiak. Elle Gray smacked a two-run home run, and Savannah Doddenhoff was 2-for-2 with an RBI.
In the second game, Chugiak played small ball to edge West, Huber said.
“We had to manufacture runs,” he said.
The Mustangs played solid defense, Huber said, and took advantage of the Eagles’ errors.
Chugiak ended the regular season with nonconference road wins over Eielson and West Valley on Friday, May 17.
The Mustangs cruised past Eielson 15-3 before beating West Valley 6-2.
