Locals receive top CIC baseball honors

Wolves, Mustangs open Legion season with wins

Two local ballplayers earned top honors following the 2013 high school season.

With a .528 batting average and 10 RBI’s in 10 games, Chugiak’s Chase Wilson won the Big Stick award. Eagle River’s David Fuller earned the Gold Glove award with a perfect fielding percentage on 45 attempts and 32 assists in seven games, five at shortstop and two at third base.

The MVP went to South’s Max Karnos, who had a 0.33 ERA and 35 strikeouts in 20 innings and a .429 batting average with eight extra-base hits and 11 RBI’s.

Seven local athletes were named to the All-Cook Inlet Conference first team, including Chugiak’s Wilson (catcher), Deven Ferris (shortstop), Kai Fugere (outfield), Zach Brueggemann (utility) and Eagle River’s Fuller (pitcher), Michael Rosenberg (first base) and Colby LeBlanc (third base).

Wesley Bennice (pitcher), R.J. Dirscherl (catcher), Fuller (shortstop) and Kyle Frost (outfield) earned second-team honors for the Wolves.

The 2013 American Legion season started last week. Here’s a look at scores for Chugiak Post 33 and Eagle River:


Wasilla 14, Chugiak 2

Visiting Wasilla held Chugiak to just three hits in a 14-2 win Tuesday, June 4 at Oberg Field. With the loss, Chugiak falls to 2-1 overall.

The Mustangs host East today (June 6) at 6:30 p.m. at Oberg.


Eagle River 26, West 4

The Wolves (2-0) used a 15-run fourth inning to cruise past West 26-4 in five innings Sunday, June 2 at Mulcahy Stadium.

Rick Ayala went 4-for-4 with two doubles, four RBI’s and scored five times for Eagle River. Colby LeBlanc also went 4-for-4 and drove in three runs.

David Fuller had two doubles and scored three times, Michael Rosenberg had two hits, including a triple, drove in five runs and scored three times. Lauren Frost had two hits, including a double, and drove in three runs, and Kyle Frost scored four times for the Wolves.

Eagle River played a doubleheader against Kenai Post 20 on Wednesday, June 5, but scores were not available when the Star went to press.


Chugiak 15, Bartlett 5

Tied 5-5, Chugiak erupted for 10 runs in the sixth inning to beat Bartlett 15-5 on Sunday, June 2 at Mulcahy. It was the Mustangs’ second straight mercy rule victory.

Hunter Hanson, Zach Brueggemann, Kai Fugere and Conner Cimmiyotti each had doubles for Chugiak. Cimiyotti also drove in three runs and earned the win in relief.


Eagle River 7, Dimond 6

Eagle River opened its Legion season with a 7-6 win over Dimond on May 30 at Chad Bax Field.

LeBlanc, Kyle Frost and Fuller had two hits apiece for the Wolves. LeBlanc, who was 2-for-2, reached base four times and drove in a run.

Ayala drove in a run and scored twice for Eagle River. Fuller earned the win in relief.


Chugiak 13, East 2

Chugiak Post 33 invoked the mercy rule in the fifth inning in a 13-2 win over East in its Legion season opener on May 29 at Oberg Field.

Chase Gall led the Mustangs, who had eight total hits, with a three RBI triple. Blake Kutch earned the win for Chugiak.
