Chugiak baseball sweeps 3 games in Fairbanks
Chugiak Post 33 swept a three-game series against Fairbanks on Saturday and Sunday, June 8-9 at Marlin Field.
The Mustangs won two league games and a nonleague contest to improve to 6-1 overall and 4-1 in the conference. Chugiak won 9-3 on Saturday then followed with 5-2 and 14-7 (nonleague) victories Sunday.
On Saturday, Chase Gall pitched eight-plus innings, giving up just six hits. Gall also had a pair of singles and drove in a run.
Conner Cimmiyotti had two hits, including an RBI triple, and Zach Brueggemann drove in two runs for Chugiak.
On Sunday, Chase Wilson pitched a complete game three-hitter, striking out seven and surrendering no earned runs in the first game of a doubleheader. Wilson also drove in two runs.
In the second game, Chugiak’s entire lineup scored at least once. Alex Bozzo’s three hits led the Mustangs, who had 12 total.
Chugiak hosted a doubleheader against Kenai on Wednesday, June 12, but scores were not available when the Star went to press. The Mustangs play South on Friday, June 14 at Taylar Young Memorial Field at 6:30 p.m. before hosting the Wolverines the following day at noon.
Chugiak has a doubleheader Sunday, June 16 against Bartlett at noon and West at 3:30 p.m. both at Oberg Field.
Bartlett 3, Eagle River 1
Bartlett scored a pair of runs in the top of the seventh inning to edge Eagle River 3-1 on Monday, June 10 at Kosinski Fields. With the loss, the Wolves fell to 3-2 overall and 1-2 in the conference.
Greg Long went 2-for-3 and drove in Eagle River’s lone run. Colby LeBlanc and Michael Rosenberg each hit doubles for the Wolves.
The Wolves host Wasilla today (June 13) at Loretta French Park at 6:30 p.m. Eagle River plays East on Friday, June 14 at Kosinski at 6:30 p.m. before hosting a doubleheader against Fairbanks on Sunday, June 16 at noon.
Chugiak 12, East 6
Chugiak used a nine-run fifth inning to down visiting East 12-6 on June 6 at Oberg Field. Nine players recorded at least one hit for the Mustangs, who had 13 total.
Zach Brueggemann had a pair of hits and two RBI’s for Chugiak. Deven Ferriss drove in two runs, and Chase Gall and Alex Bozzo each hit doubles.
Eagle River splits with Twins
Eagle River split a doubleheader with visiting Kenai Post 20 on June 5 at Oberg Field.
In the first league game, the Twins earned an 8-7 come-from-behind win when Tyler Fritz hit two-out RBI triple in the top of the ninth inning.
Eagle River had an opportunity to win when Fritz hit Christian Fabacher and walked Ricky Ayala and David Fuller to load the bases with one out in the bottom of the ninth. But Kenai’s Ethan Oliver struck out Kyle Frost and Colby LeBlanc to earn the save for the Twins.
Ayala, Michael Rosenberg and Lauren Frost — who had three RBI’s — each had a double for the Wolves. Cameron Fabacher added a pair of hits for Eagle River.
Eagle River won the nonleague game 7-4. Ayala hit a triple and R.J. Dirscherl was 2-for-3 for the Wolves.
