Society to write homesteading history
Our Historical Society is planning to produce a book about homesteading in our area, and we need your help. If you, or your family, acquired property anywhere between South Fork and Eklutna from the federal government through the process known as homesteading, we would like to include your “prove-up” story as part of the book.
Patents were issued for parcels ranging from less than one acre up to 160 acres. Included were homesteads (mostly 160 acres), homesites and headquarter sites (mostly 5 acres); small tract sales and leases (mostly 2 ½ acres); and trad and manufacturing sites. The requirements for teach type of homestead patent variet. Tell us about your “homestead” experience.
We are asking you to help make our history as precise and in-depth as possible by telling your story. We would like to include as many families as possible, including the families that came and built a business in the area. We want to give an accurate account of the hardships and joys of the homesteading experience. If you are not the original homesteader or family member, perhaps you have stories of a specific homesteader family’s experience that you can share.
We can offer help in putting your story together and provide guidelines to get you started. Please contact us at 688-4706 and leave a message or email email@example.com or firstname.lastname@example.org. We will get back to you.
Please help us in our endeavor to make our history accurate. We are looking forward to hearing from you and hope you are interested in being included in our book.
