Eagle River picked up a pair of American Legion wins over Kenai to improve to 5-7 in league play and 8-10 overall.

The Wolves earned a 6-5, come-from-behind win in extra innings Saturday, June 29 at Coral Seymour Memorial Park.

Trailing by two in a league game scheduled for seven innings, Eagle River’s Ricky Ayala hit a two-run single in the seventh to tie the game at 3-3.

In the eighth inning, Eagle River took a 5-4 lead after Trent Talley drew a walk with the bases loaded to score Michael Rosenberg, who went 2-for-4. Kyle Frost added some insurance with an RBI single, which proved to be the game-winning hit.

The Wolves scored six runs in the sixth inning to cruise to a 19-10 win in the second game. Greg Long went 4-for-5 to lead the Wolves. Ayala had four RBI’s and three hits, R.J. Dirscherl, Rosenberg and David Fuller each scored three runs, and Andrew Mousseau scored twice and drove in a pair of runs for Eagle River.

The Wolves hosted a doubleheader against Service on Monday, July 1 and played Dimond the following day, but scores were not available when the Star went to press.

Eagle River opens the Todd Ryan Memorial Tournament in Wasilla today (July 4) against Dimond at 4 p.m. at McManus Field. They play Ohio on Friday, July 5 at 10 a.m. and the crossover round starts Saturday, July 6. The other bracket includes Wasilla, Bartlett and Service.


Mustang trip continues

Chugiak Post 33 battled through illness but lost all four games at Brooks Stadium in Paducah, Ky. The Mustangs opened the tourney Friday, June 28 with a 5-4 loss to Cape Girardeau, Mo., followed by a 10-2 loss to tournament-host Paducah. Chugiak played two more games Sunday, June 30, losing 9-0 to Terre Haute, Ind., and 8-7 to Ballwin, Mo.

Alex Hess led Chugiak with six hits for the tournament. Chase Wilson and Zach Brueggemann had five hits apiece.

Chugiak travels to Columbia, Tenn., for the Independence Day Classic on Friday, July 5 through Monday, July 8.


Eagle River 12, West 7

Colby LeBlanc, Rosenberg, Michael Fitzgerald and David Fuller had two hits apiece to help the Wolves get past West 12-7 on June 27 at Loretta French Park.


Chugiak 7, Eagle River 4

Conner Cimmiyotti and Deven Ferriss had three hits apiece to lead Chugiak past Eagle River 7-4 on June 25 at Loretta French Park.

Hess drove in a pair of runs on two hits, including a double, and Wilson had two hits for the Mustangs.

LeBlanc led Eagle River with three hits, including a double.
