Anchorage Police say two people were injured and two dogs died when this Ford Fusion struck a side-dump semi truck Wednesday afternoon on the Old Glenn Highway near Loretta French Park in Chugiak.

Two people were injured and two puppies died when the Ford Fusion they were riding in collided with a side-dump semi truck Wednesday, July 24 in Chugiak.

Police spokeswoman Dani Myren said the accident occurred at around 4 p.m. on the Old Glenn Highway near Loretta French Park. Myren said the northbound Fusion, driven by Michael Trudeau, 25, of Wasilla, crossed the center line and struck the southbound truck nearly head-on. Both Trudeau and a passenger, 23-year-old Kayla Ponte, of Anchorage, were taken to local hospitals with what Myren said appeared to be non life threatening injuries. The driver of the truck, 37-year-old Melvin Johnson, of Chugiak, was uninjured.

Myren said no citations have been issued at this time. She couldn't speculate as to why Trudeau crossed into the semi's lane.

Two other puppies riding in the Fusion survived the collision and were taken to Ravenwood Veterinary Clinic for treatment. A Ravenwood employee said the animals were treated there and turned over to Animal Control.

Animal Control spokesperson Brooke Taylor said Thursday, July 25 that the puppies were being held there in protective custody until an owner or other responsible party could be located to take care of them. The practice is common in cases where animals are brought to Animal Control after emergency situations such as fires or auto accidents, she said.

The accident slowed traffic for about an hour while police cleared the scene.
