Dyson pushes ‘Great Divorce’

Sen. Fred Dyson’s crusade to have Chugiak-Eagle River secede from the Anchorage Municipality hit a snag when the Legislature’s Ethics Committee ruled the Eagle River senator could not push the idea while on state time.

Dyson, who had been visiting local community councils in support of the idea, said he hoped someone else would take up the cause.

Lee Jordan, who served as mayor of the short-lived Chugiak-Eagle River Borough during a previous secession attempt in 1974, said he still supported independence.

“The intent would be to have control over our own affairs,” Jordan told the Star. “We’ve always felt like stepchildren out here.”

Four rescued after plane crash

A Cessna 172 went down in a forested area near the Eagle River Nature Center, but all four occupants escaped without serious injury.

A National Guard HH60 Pavehawk helicopter already in the area for training was able to locate the crash site and remove those onboard from the crash site within two hours.
