Five flaggers return for Wolves
Despite opening their season to perennial flag football powerhouse Dimond — which extended its winning streak to 18 games with a 48-0 shutout over Eagle River on Saturday, Aug. 24 — the Wolves are staying positive.
“We won’t let one loss get us down for the season,” senior Chloe Lindsey said.
Lindsey, one of five returners, said Eagle River wants to continue to build on its success over the past two seasons. The Wolves finished 8-8 last season and 8-7 in 2011 after going winless in 2010 and 2009.
“We want to make an impact like last year’s team made an impact,” Lindsey said.
The other returners include Lauren Frost — a 2012 First Team All Cook Inlet Conference selection — Jazmin Mercado, Becky Wyatt and Maddie Corbett.
“We’ve got a great group of core girls,” head coach Matt Turner said.
Most of the new faces to varsity played JV last season, Wyatt said, and bring plenty of talent to Eagle River.
“We have a lot of speed, a lot of good hands,” she said.
Newcomer Tara Fisher is another boon to the program, Turner said. A keeper for Eagle River’s soccer team who earned first team all-conference honors last year, Fisher is natural defender, Turner said.
“She’s goal those goalie hands,” he said. “She doesn’t like letting things by her.”
Eagle River graduated 12 seniors from last year’s team, including first team all CIC selections Gaby Mordini and Skylar Metzel and second team selections Scout Warners, Alyssa Randall and Jessica Moore.
The Wolves have 14 on the varsity roster and 34 in the program. Eagle River is fielding a C team for the first time in three years, Turner said.
Practice is the key to achieving the team’s goals of finishing with a winning record and claiming its first CIC championship, Wyatt said.
Determination is equally important, Lindsey said.
“We have to try our hardest,” she said. “Be the best we can.”
Eagle River fell to 0-2 after visiting Bartlett defeated the Wolves 8-0 on Tuesday, Aug. 27 at ERHS.
The Wolves play West on Friday, Aug. 30 at 8 p.m. at Anchorage Football Stadium.
