Jordan wins conference XC run title
During his middle school cross country running career, Ty Jordan saved his best performance for the final race of the season at Kincaid Park.
That trend has followed him to high school.
The Chugiak sophomore shaved more than 20 seconds off his previous best Kincaid time to win the boys race at the Cook Inlet Conference Championships on Saturday, Sept. 28.
“I’m used to running my hardest here,” Jordan said after winning the five-kilometer race in 16 minutes, 5 seconds. “I always get my fastest times here.”
Jordan finished more than 24 seconds ahead of South’s Seiji Takagi in second. Jordan attributed his success this year to his off-season training.
Five Mustangs cracked the top 25 for a third-place team finish and a state berth. David McPhetres placed fifth followed by Roan Hall (12th), Tim Sorensen (23rd) and John Weaver (24th).
The team has been working hard, McPhetres said, and knew it had a good chance to return to state.
“We were pretty confident going into this,” he said.
Alec Smith (14th) was Eagle River’s lone boy to qualify for state.
Chugiak’s Sara Hartke led all local girls with a 10th-place finish. Hannah Booher (15th) also earned an automatic state berth by finishing in the individual top 15.
South’s Morgan Lash finished first in 18:21.
For just the second time in school history, Eagle River is sending a team to state. Nikki Boggs (12th), Veronica Stewart (16th), Peyton Young (21st), Summer Frazier (26th) and Kirsten Grismer (27th) earned a fourth-place team finish for the Wolves.
Knowing Boggs would have a strong race, head coach Jacob Bera said grabbing a team state berth would depend on Eagle River’s next six runners.
“Each one of them pulled it out,” he said.
The girls are excited to be extending their season, Bera said.
“They are psyched,” he said.
West High swept the boys and girls team titles.
The state meet will be held Saturday, Oct. 5 at Bartlett. The Class 4A boys race is slated to start at 12:45 p.m. and the Class 4A girls are scheduled to start at 2:15 p.m.
