"Classroom notes from Chugiak"

Wednesday, October 30, 2013 - 19:00

From the Knik Arm Courier, March 30, 1960:

1A: A new pupil entered school in Mrs. Emmert’s 1A Tuesday. Her name is LaVonne McKay.

2A: A new student enrolled in Mrs. Mendenhall’s 2A class from Palmer. His name is Ronnie McKay.

4A: You are welcome to 4A’s Freak Show. They have captured a monster from the Chugach Mountains. The boys and girls will try to hold it until April 2. Don’t fail to see the ferocious monster!

5A: Maurice Hendrickson brought a live rat to school for some of the classes to see. In our science class, we are growing some planets (sic). In the Fun Festival, we are sponsoring a cake walk.

6B: In science, we are learning weather signs. We know how to tell weather a bit. In arithmetic, we are learning how to change fractions to decimals.

We are practicing baseball. Some of the boys called us girls sissies so Donna hit a homer, and Phoebe hit one past the teeter-totters. Janet also hit one way out in the field.

We have made silhouettes of each other. Some of them came out very Strange, so we had to put our names on them.

7A: One of our students, Donald Ball, left Chugiak to move to Anchorage, and we hope he may return in the future. When the Moose Horn Garbage burned, the Crabtree’s car was burned, too. Frank is a student in our room, and they hope to get a car soon.
