Short power outage affects thousands
Approximately 14,000 Matanuska Electric Association members in the Chugiak-Eagle River area lost power four about four hours Monday, Nov. 4.
Damaged equipment at the Pipple substation north of Eagle River caused the outage, said MEA spokesperson Kevin Brown.
“We are still trying to determine the cause of the damage,” he said Monday.
The lights went out just after noon in Chugiak, Birchwood, Eagle River, Eklutna and Peters Creek.
All 11 Anchorage School District schools in the area lost power, ASD spokesperson Heidi Embley said in a press release. Eagle Academy Charter School asked parents to pick their children up early if possible, she said.
All other schools continued with a normal schedule, Embley said.
MEA restored power to 3,400 members by 1:30 p.m. Brown said, and 4,400 more shortly after. The co-op restored power to all its members before 4:30 p.m., he said.
