Woman dies in mudslide
Heavy rainfall is believed to be the cause of a mudslide that killed a woman and demolished her home on Old Palmer Highway.
Windy weather caused two transformer fires in Chugiak. Wind also caused downed power lines in Eagle River.
Rain on top of packed snow and ice combined with freezing nighttime temperatures have made roads extremely dangerous.
Vandalism forces post office to lock doors early
Vandalism has caused Eagle River postmaster Phil Wold to limit the hours when the post office lobby is open. Wold told the Star that trash was dumped throughout the post office and human excrement was smeared on counter tops and windows sometime last week.
The lobby doors will be locked at 6 p.m. on weekdays and 2 p.m. on Saturdays. To ease the holiday rush, Saturday service hours have been extended for the next two weeks.
