Missing Eagle River man found dead at home
Nearly a month after being reported missing, Eagle River’s Stephen Gingrich, 58, was found dead at his Hiland Road home Thursday, Dec. 12.
A relative of Gingrich found his body buried under a concrete slab in the crawlspace area beneath the home, Anchorage Police said in a press release.
“It appears that Gingrich had been digging beneath the slab when it fell and crushed him,” APD spokesperson Dani Myren said in an email.
The tight crawlspace was a work in progress, Myren said in a phone interview. She said Gingrich was working to expand the space into the basement.
Gingrich’s relative was checking on the house when he found the body, Myren said.
Police searched the area where the body was found, Myren wrote, but “a large amount of debris and clutter had further obstructed Gingrich’s body from being located at the time.”
A neighbor, who had not seen or heard from Gingrich in two weeks, reported him missing Nov. 16.
His next of kin have been notified. As of Tuesday, Dec. 17, the Anchorage Fire Department was still working on a plan to safely remove the body.
“They are concerned about the structural integrity of the residence,” Myren wrote.
