Missing JBER airman found dead

Anchorage Police found the body of a missing Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson airman the evening of Tuesday, Dec. 10 at the Basher trailhead in East Anchorage.

Staff Sgt. Tanner Allen Volkers, 22, was reported missing Sunday, Dec. 8. He was last seen leaving his East Anchorage residence with some of his belongings Saturday, Dec. 7, APD said.

The cause of death is being investigated by the JBER Office of Special Investigations and APD, according to a press release.

A firefighter with the 673rd Civil Engineer Squadron, Volkers, of Nampa, Idaho, had been stationed in Alaska since January 2010.

“On behalf of all the Arctic Warriors, I want to express my deepest condolences for the loss of Staff Sgt. Tanner Volkers,” Col. Brian Duffy, JBER and 673rd Air Base Wing commander, said in a written statement. “Our thoughts and sympathies are with the Volkers family, friends and the JBER community during this tragic loss.”
