Applesauce Cake

Recipe by Faith Rubin published in ‘Something Special Alaska Style,’ a collection of recipes gathered by Chugiak Elementary PTA in the 1960s.


1 cup oleo or shortening

2 cups sugar

2 eggs

3 cups sifted flour

1 tablespoon baking soda

½ teaspoon salt

1 tablespoon cinnamon

1 ½ teaspoons nutmeg

1 teaspoon cloves

2 ½ cups applesauce

2 tablespoons corn syrup

1 cup raisins

1 cups nuts


Cream oleo and sugar. Beat in eggs, one at a time. Sift together flour, salt, baking soda and spices. Add alternately with combined applesauce and syrup. Fold in raisins and nuts. Pour into two greased, 8-inch layer cake pans. Bake at 300 degrees for one hour.
