CHS girls full of youth
Chugiak’s girls might be young — but they’re soaking up basketball knowledge as quickly as head coach Ryan Hales feeds it to them.
“We learn things quick,” Hales said.
Half of the team are juniors and the rest are underclassmen. Returning players include Anna Ingraham and Brandy Bookout — who logged significant varsity minutes last season — and Hannah Russell.
Despite graduating five seniors last year, Hales said his young team is one of the strongest squads he’s seen in his four years.
“We’re a lot more athletic,” he said. “We’re more aggressive.”
Hales expects the Mustangs to provide exciting games for their fans.
“I think they’re gonna challenge a lot of teams,” he said.
Chugiak started the season with a third-place finish at the Clark Cochran Christmas Classic in Ketchikan on Dec. 27-29, 2013. The Mustangs cruised past Wrangell 53-11 in the first round.
Chugiak controlled its second game against Thunder Mountain most of the way and took a seven-point lead into the final quarter. But the Falcons outscored the Mustangs 18-7 in the fourth quarter to earn a 41-37 win.
Chugiak rebounded with a 45-23 victory over North Pole to claim third place. Tournament-host Ketchikan downed Thunder Mountain 61-55 to win the title.
