Three local officers to join APD

Three Anchorage Police Academy graduates were from Eagle River. Alan Rydberg, John Bennett and Jason Allen were among 13 graduates honored during a ceremony at Loussac Library. Allen was class valedictorian.

“Our education is about to take on a new reality,” Allen said during his speech.

Fred Meyer site plan approved

The Anchorage Planning and Zoning Commission approved site plans for a Fred Meyer store in downtown Eagle River.

Despite the approval, PNZ said the store must reduce the height of its main sign and make changes to the “monstrous façade” on the north face of the building.

The proposed 40-foot-high sign is excessive, said chair Daphne Brown.

“Everyone will know where that store is as soon as it is open,” she said.

Council against speed limit reduction

The Eagle River Valley Community Council did not join the rest of the Municipality when it asked not to have its area’s standard residential speed limit reduced from 25 mph to 20 mph.

“People who are speeding are going to keep speeding, regardless of the speed limit,” council member Lee Cline said.
