DESCRIPTION:<p>\n	Friends of Nike Site Summit and the Alaska Association fo
 r Historic Preservation invite the public to their third annual open house
  and reception Thursday\, Oct. 25\, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the BP Energy Cent
 er\, 1014 Energy Court\, in Anchorage.&nbsp\; The evening will include dis
 plays and information about the restoration of Site Summit\, the former Ni
 ke Hercules missile battery atop Mount Gordon Lyon in Arctic Valley.&nbsp\
 ; Refreshments will be served and awards presented.</p>\n<p>\n	FONSS was f
 ormed by local volunteers in 2007 to advocate for the preservation of Nike
  Site Summit.&nbsp\; In 2009\, it partnered with the U.S. Army (now Joint 
 Base Elmendorf-Richardson)\, the National Park Service\, and State Histori
 c Preservation Officer to preserve the historic mountaintop fortress overl
 ooking Arctic Valley.&nbsp\; FONSS&#39\; mission is to preserve and interp
 ret the site for the education of current and future generations about the
  Cold War\, and by doing this memorialize the millions of veterans who ser
 ved during the Cold War.</p>\n<p>\n	After stabilizing three sentry buildin
 gs in 2009 and 2010\, FONSS last year began stabilization work on two larg
 er\, more damaged buildings. &nbsp\;Work on the Missile Maintenance and La
 unch Control buildings continued in 2012 as preliminary work also was begu
 n on FONSS&rsquo\; newest challenge\, saving the facility&rsquo\;s dog ken
 nels.&nbsp\; At the open house\, a slide show presentation will showcase t
 his summer&rsquo\;s accomplishments and FONSS&rsquo\; plans for next summe
 r.</p>\n<p>\n	There is still much work to be done\, and FONSS is raising f
 unds for more extensive work in 2013.&nbsp\; FONSS had two successful publ
 ic tours of the site last month and will conduct similar tours in cooperat
 ion with Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in 2013.</p>\n<p>\n	Call 694-3570
