\n Energy issues are at the core of Alaska's economy. Produc tion and export of Alaska oil provides 90% of state government funds and\, according to recent studies\, up to one-half of Alaskan jobs. At the same time\, in some areas Alaska's internal cost of energy is one of the highe st in the nation\, and continued declines in production of natural gas in Cook Inlet raise concerns about the potential for brownouts in Southcentra l and other parts of the Railbelt in coming winters.

\nThis Conference will examine both aspects of Alaska energy. Our distingui shed faculty will address the outlook for stemming production declines in North Slope oil\, the emerging future for oil and gas development in the A laska Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) and the current status of projects des igned to market gas from the Alaska North Slope both outside and inside th e state. We will also examine energy projects in the Railbelt\, Alaska's p lans for dealing with Cook Inlet gas declines and the steps being taken to reduce the costs of energy in other parts of the state.

\n To accomplish these objectives\, there will be presentations from ke y members of the administration\, legislators and other governmental and p rivate leaders who will provide an outstanding overview of the energy chal lenges facing Alaska\, practical insights into the responses that have bee n identified\, and the status of efforts being made to implement those res ponses.
