Fort Wainwright soldier charged in death of 3-year-old son
A soldier with the 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, was charged on April 9 in the death of his 3-year-old son April 4 in the family’s on-post residence.
Sgt. Nathaniel E. Ulroan, 23, was detained by Fort Wainwright police April 4 and placed in pre-trial confinement at the Fairbanks Correctional Center after being treated at Fairbanks Memorial Hospital for injuries related to the incident.
He has been charged with one count of premeditated murder, one count of kidnapping, two counts of aggravated assault, one count of assault consummated by a battery and one count of communicating a threat.
The child was found dead at the residence April 4 by Fort Wainwright military police. Ulroan, a native of Berea, Ohio, is being held at the Fairbanks Correction Center awaiting an Article 32 pretrial hearing to determine whether sufficient evidence exists to warrant trial by court-martial.
Ulroan joined the Army in October 2008 and after completing Basic Training and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., he was stationed at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash., before being assigned to Fort Wainwright in December 2012 as a combat engineer.
While at JBLM, he deployed to Iraq for three months and Afghanistan for 11 months in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom.
The case is still under investigation by the Army Criminal Investigation Command.
